Homemade Laundry Detergent

Ever wonder what is in your store bought detergents?  Does the ingredient list on your favorite laundry detergent contain words you don’t recognize or can’t pronounce? Do you have a skin condition or sensitive skin? Is your immune system already compromised?  Many ingredients in modern day cleaning products contain harmful ingredients which are toxic.  Some of us fair better at metabolizing these substances and eliminating them from our body. For a great number of us, these toxins can not be tolerated, especially for those with an already compromised immune system.

Why do they put these ingredients in our products?  Well, as consumers we have formed expectations of how our products should look and feel.  Many ingredients are added merely to thicken a product or provide a healthy lather, and preserve the shelf life of the product. These ingredients don’t always do a thing to make the product work better, just that they look and feel the way we have grown accustomed.  In my opinion, which is really worth squat, using harmful ingredients that are damaging the environment should have never been allowed in the first place.  But this is an entirely different rant.

The bottom line is, there are safer alternatives, but they are more expensive and it comes down to what the consumer will be willing to pay and profits for the company.  Manufactures are looking at inexpensive ways to get the same result, without having to worry about the effects of our health or the future of the environment.

I didn’t know about the EWG website at the time, and was so frustrated trying to find an alternative that cleaned well and had less of a negative impact on the environment, and less toxic to my body.  So, this is when I looked into making my own homemade version.  I am so happy I did!  If you are concerned about the safety of a product, but don’t have the inclination to make your own, here is a link to safer A rated laundry detergent.

*You can use this detergent in the dishwasher, it works beautifully, even here in Vegas with very hard water.  I use vinegar in the rinse cycle, which helps.  But the dishes come out just as clean, if not cleaner, as my previous powder from Seventh Generation.

If you have an interest in making your own detergent, whether it is to save money, reduce chemical exposure to yourself and the environment, or just cause you like making your own stuff,  here is a recipe I use at home in my wash.
